ARTEMIS FOWL

Kenneth Branagh - 2020

VFX company : MPC (Montreal)

Role : Key Artist - Digital matte painter / 3DDMP

Within MPC Montreal’s Environment Department, I joined a dedicated Strike Team. Our role was to handle shots and sequences that were particularly technical or highly creative across multiple in-house productions.

Within this context, I worked on Artemis Fowl, where I was responsible for building a digital double of an Italian village. This setup allowed me to work using a 2.5D workflow, transforming drone footage into night shots by adding architectural details and artificial lighting, while refining the overall lighting to enhance visual credibility.

This 2.5D digital matte painting workflow also helped bridge the gap between live-action plates and digital cameras, while naturally enabling additional CGI paintovers. This approach was essential, as both the 2.5D DMP geometry and the 3D environment geometry played a key role in facilitating integration with digital characters, FX simulations, and lighting.

Artemis Fowl offered a rich creative playground for a 3D DMP artist, combining live-action and CG workflows through extensive use of digital cameras for plate and CGI enhancements, set extensions, and background replacements.
