“Godzilla: King of the Monsters” was the perfect opportunity to showcase my skills and execution in creating a digital double of the city of Boston, with a particular focus on the Fenway Park area.

Based on real-life location photography and provided low-poly data, I quickly established the layout for the digital environments. These layouts formed the foundation for the creation of various 3D assets, while others naturally evolved into 2.5D digital matte paintings, a workflow I particularly enjoy working with as a Digital Matte Painter.

This project was a highly rewarding experience, both from a technical and a human perspective.

I crafted a 2.5D digital double of Boston to span the full sequence, translating the real city into a detailed digital environment that supports both visual continuity and cinematic storytelling.

Careful attention was given to following the established artistic direction, particularly in color, mood, and lighting, to ensure the digital environment not only matched the live-action plates but also enhanced the narrative impact of the sequence.

By creating an accurate 2.5D world, I ensured the 3D geometry met the needs of FX and compositing artists, allowing simulations to interact realistically with the digital matte painting while supporting the sequence’s cinematic storytelling.

By placing Nuke at the center of my workflow, I can respond efficiently to sequence requirements while facilitating collaborative work. When combined with Photoshop and Maya, this method allows a single 2.5D digital matte painting to generate coverage for an entire sequence.

Beyond environment creation, my role as a Digital Matte Painter on this large-scale production included delivering invisible effects, such as set extensions and delicate CGI enhancements, carefully integrated to remain unnoticed by the audience.
